Not everyone has experienced the fortune of living in a time and place that is largely respectful of gender rights. It's easy to forget that women have long been stifled, and many communities still continue a legacy of repression and violence. On this International Women's Day, let's focus on the freedom of femininity, on figures of strength and truth and on all that beauty and passion.

To mark the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, My Sunshine Coast Events is holding a celebration of women's achievements, enabling us girls to network and be inspired. The event is being held at Halfmoon Haven Retreat Oceanfront Resort in Halfmoon Bay and admission is by donation. More info can be found on their website.

From Madame Curie to Emily Murphy, Queen Elizabeth to Angela Davis, even Canada's (but we'll claim her as our own) Joni Mitchell. Which great ladies have inspired you?
